5 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe This Winter

5 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe This Winter

5 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe This Winter

#1 Power Outage Prep

Unfortunately winter temperatures don’t just bring ski season and snowball fights. Power outages are very common as temperatures drop. Power lines can have ice build up and wind speeds can create short circuiting during the winter.

In case of a power outage, your home will be much safer if you do these things:

  • Keep a cooler in your home incase your refrigerator and freezer turn off in a power outage.
  • Make sure you have some form of lighting, whether that is candles or battery-powered flashlights.
  • Make sure your plumbing is insulation to pipes will not freeze. Sadly, winter commonly brings burst pipes and water damage. If you do experience a burst pipe during a power outage, or other time, give Delta Restoration Services of the Wasatch Front a call (shameless plug). For full water damage restoration service and a water extraction company you can trust, Delta Restoration Services is on call 24/7

#2 Home Maintenance

If you are staying home this winter or traveling, if is important to keep your home safe with regular maintenance. Keep your heater on, so your pipes do not freeze. Another helpful winter tip is to make sure your insulation is okay. If your energy bills are much higher, you experience more water leaks and damp drywall, your insulation may have gone bad.

#3 Stock-up For Emergencies

Winter makes any disaster or emergency much worse on your family. Stocking up shelf-stable food can provide peace of mind. In case of a power outage or other emergency, it is better if the food does not require refrigeration or cooking to eat. Make sure you have an emergency kit and first-aid kit on hand.

#4 Prevent or Remove Icicles

Icicles and ice dams can not only damage your home, but also cause water leaks.

If your home always has icicles, it may be time to call in a professional in between snow storms to fix potential areas where icicles form, and remove the ones that have. Keep your family safe by making sure your kids know not to play under or around any formed icicles. If removing icicles yourself is your plan, make sure you wear protective eyewear and a helmet.

#5 Shovel Snow

The holidays are a great time for neighbors, family, and friends to stop by. Keep them safe by always keeping your walkways and driveways shoveled and free of snow. If you know it is going to snow, make sure your shovels, snowblower and ice melt are ready to go. Preventing full on ice buildup is very important during the winter.
